Massage Therapy with Posture Education aims to address chronic pain and tension of the back, neck, and shoulders, that are commonly caused by poor posture, which usually result from having unergonomic habits while sitting, sleeping, working, and a variety of things. Massage is used to reduce pain and tension of the affected areas, and posture education is used to educate and demonstrate to the patients how to have an ideal ergonomic posture and the specific ways to achieve it.

Good candidate for posture education:
People with sitting jobs (such as office, computer workers)
People that have chronic low back, neck and shoulder issues
People that feel like their back and shoulders are always stiff
People that think their posture is not very good (slouched, hunched shoulders and back)
People that have back, neck and shoulder pain when they wake up in the morning
People that have history of sciatica and disc issues that continue to bother them
People that have tension headache that may be coming from the neck and shoulders

What is the treatment like?

Massage therapy is performed first to interview the patient and assess their body and posture using hand palpation to identify individual problems such as muscle stiffness and posture. Massage is used to reduce muscle tension and pain in the affected areas. After the massage is finished, the therapist discusses with their patient about the findings during the treatment and moves on to posture education. Posture education is used to educate and demonstrate the patient in order to help restore balanced posture using a number of techniques that are tailored to each patient's condition. Usually it addresses the patient on ways to help with proper standing, sitting, sleeping, and stretching. In more advanced cases, rehabilitative exercises may be demonstrated. Posture education equips the patient with knowledge and tools to better take care of their posture and their body as a long-term self-care.

Gary Chan

Registered Acupuncturist Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner

Musculoskeletal pain, migraines, anxiety, sleep disorders, gynecological issues and other physical and mental ailments can take away your strength and joy. By combining Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and energy healing, Gary Chan allows you to strip away the power of illnesses so you can recover, rejuvenate, and restore balance to your body and mind.

Gary is a top-rated holistic health expert with over 12 years of experience. He graduated from the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Vancouver and is licensed by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia (CTCMA).

After gaining his diploma in 2006, Gary interned at a hospital in China and a private clinic in Hong Kong. He is the author behind “Living a Happy Life in an Unhappy World”, a mental wellness book showcasing the benefits of Chinese medicine. Dr Tan’s Balance Method, Pulse Regulating Acupuncture, Original Yin Stretching Method, Auricular Medicines, Reiki Energy Healing, and Transformation with Matrix Energetic are just some of the other therapies he is certified in.

Before entering the healthcare realm, Gary worked as a computer programmer. He had no experience with TCM until he developed severe pain in one of his upper teeth. His dentist said the pain was caused by an inflamed nerve and that a root canal would solve the problem. Gary decided to think about it as this extreme procedure would cause much discomfort and cost a fortune. He left the dentist and went to the pharmacy to pick up some painkillers. During his visit, the pharmacist on duty told Gary to try acupuncture.

Gary thought he had nothing to lose and went to see an acupuncturist right away. The day after his first treatment, he was shocked to experience an 80 per cent decrease in pain. After taking an herbal concoction for another day, Gary was completely relieved of his toothache. This transformative experience sparked Gary’s interest in acupuncture and eventually led him to pursue a career in holistic health.

Besides TCM, Gary is passionate about spirituality and believes building meaningful relationships is key to living a fulfilling life. During his free time, he enjoys playing board games and disc golf with friends and family. He also loves hanging out with this cat.

Gary is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
